Two ways to organize print-on-demand
Printful and Printify do the same job for a store owner: you design a product in their catalog, publish it to your shop, and when a customer orders, they print it, pack it and ship it while charging you per order. Neither asks for stock, minimums or a monthly fee to start. The difference is in who does the printing, and most of the practical differences follow from that.
Printful runs seven in-house fulfillment centers across Europe and North America and works with partner facilities in Brazil, Japan and Australia for selected products. Some catalog products are outsourced to other partners. Its system picks the facility for each order based on product availability, stock and the print method, and you cannot choose it yourself. Techniques include DTG, DTFlex (its DTF method), embroidery and all-over print.
Printify is a marketplace layer over independent print providers. For each product you pick a provider, and the base cost, blank brands, print methods and production times differ between them. Alternatively, Printify Choice uses a network of providers Printify rates highly and routes each order to the one it judges best on price, quality and distance to the customer, at a fixed price and with no extra subscription (Printify Choice).
Where they differ in practice
Price comparison. Printful's product price includes the blank, one print or embroidery placement and fulfillment, with shipping and tax on top (Printful pricing). Printify's price is the chosen provider's product cost plus shipping, and Printify says it makes its money from a margin on that fulfillment price rather than platform or listing fees (Printify pricing). Because Printify prices vary by provider, there is no single answer to which is cheaper. Price the same garment, sizes, print area and destination on both, including extra placements such as a sleeve or back print.
Consistency. With Printful, one company runs the printing for its in-house products, so blanks and print settings are more likely to match from order to order. With Printify, a single provider per product gives you consistency within that product, while routing between providers trades some consistency for availability. Printify routing allows a small design scaling difference between providers, which is worth knowing for fitted placements.
Stock problems. POD services depend on blank stock like everyone else. Printify's optional Order Routing, described in its help center, moves an order to an alternative provider when a product is out of stock, discontinued, the provider is closed or its production time is much longer, within a maximum extra cost you set. Printful's facilities draw on its own stock and choose the facility automatically.
Branding. Both can print a neck label inside the garment, but only on products with a tear-away label that can be removed cleanly. Printful also stores pack-ins and custom packaging at select centers, though branding cannot be added to orders containing outsourced products. Printify supports packaging inserts with a short list of providers, routes neck-label orders only to providers that print them, and does not support either on express shipping (Printify branding). If a finished retail feel matters, private label finishing explains what labels and packaging can do.
Storing your own stock. Printful stopped offering product storage in every location on March 1, 2026, so neither service is a home for a bulk run you had printed elsewhere. If you want bulk stock and POD in one store, see the hybrid setups in print-on-demand vs bulk production.
Paid tiers. Printful's optional Growth membership discounts products and branding and becomes free once you reach an annual sales threshold. Printify Premium discounts products and raises the number of stores you can connect. Run the numbers at your real volume before paying for either.
Testing before you commit
Order samples of your own design, on the blank you plan to sell, from each service you are considering, and if you use Printify, from each provider you shortlist. Check the print against your file, the hand feel, the neck label and the packaging, then wash each sample several times and compare again. Look at the production time each quotes for your main market. DTF vs DTG helps you read what you are looking at.
Which to choose
- Choose Printful if you want a single company running its own print facilities, branded inside labels and pack-ins on the same platform, and a simple per-product price that includes one placement.
- Choose Printify if you want to pick providers by price, location or blank, or prefer a routed network such as Printify Choice that reduces out-of-stock risk.
- Use both if different products suit different services, accepting that mixed orders ship separately.
- Use neither for your best sellers once their sales are steady enough to forecast: a bulk run usually lowers the unit cost and opens up any blank and ink. Choosing an e-commerce platform for merch and merch fulfillment options cover the store and shipping side of that move.
