Retail Finishing: Labels, Hang Tags and Packaging

In short

Retail finishing is everything that happens to a garment after decoration and before it ships: neck labels and relabeling, woven or printed hang tags, folding, polybags, tissue wrap, sticker seals and packing into branded boxes. We do it as part of the production run, so finished goods leave ready for a shelf, a retailer's warehouse or a customer's door.

Why retail finishing

Retail Finishing, done right.

A shirt can be printed perfectly and still look like merch if it arrives loose in a mailer. Retail finishing is the layer that makes it read as a product: the label in the neck, a hang tag with your name on it, a crisp fold, a sealed bag or a wrapped box. These details are small next to the garment and the print, and they are the first thing a buyer, a store or a customer notices.

Doing it at the point of production also saves a step many young brands end up doing themselves: receiving boxes of loose shirts, then tagging and bagging them at a kitchen table or paying a warehouse to do it. When finishing happens before the goods ship, every piece is labeled, folded and packed the same way, checked in a final QC pass, and sent out in bulk or one order at a time.

How it works

Finishing starts at the collar. On a blank, the maker's label comes out, torn away or cut, and your neck label goes in, printed inside the neck or sewn in as a woven or printed label. Garments that already carry your label, such as cut and sew pieces, skip this step and go straight to tagging.

Hang tags go on next, usually with a plastic fastener shot through a label or seam so the fabric itself is not pierced, or with a string loop and seal for a more crafted feel. Printed hang tags are card with your artwork, often with a barcode or size on the back; woven hang tags are loomed like a label for a heavier, textured look. The tag's position, at the neck label, side seam or sleeve, is part of the spec.

Each piece is then folded to a set size so stacks, bags and boxes stay uniform, with the size marked on the outside so nobody has to open a bag to check. A polybag protects against dust and handling on the way to a store or a customer; tissue wrap and a sticker seal turn the same fold into a proper unboxing.

Branded box pack-out puts finished pieces into your boxes, with cards or other items arranged in the order you specify, for PR kits, gift sets, bundles and store displays. Everything is packed to your spec and given a final QC check, then shipped in bulk to a warehouse or store, or held as inventory for pick and pack fulfillment.

Is it right for your order?

When to choose it, and when not to.

Choose retail finishing when
  • Your goods are going to a store or boutique that expects tagged, bagged, size-marked product.
  • You want customers to open a wrapped, sealed package instead of a shirt loose in a mailer.
  • You are relabeling blanks and need the new neck labels applied before the goods ship.
  • You are putting together PR boxes, bundles or gift sets that need several items packed together.
  • You would rather not spend launch week tagging and bagging boxes of shirts yourself.
  • You want every piece of a drop folded, tagged and packed exactly the same way.
Pick something else when
  • The order is staff shirts or event giveaways handed out by the box; bulk-packed screen printing is all you need.
  • What you want to change is the garment itself, its fit or fabric, which starts with cut and sew.
  • Your main need is storing stock and shipping it one order at a time over weeks, which is the job of fulfillment.
Options

What we can do

Neck labels and relabeling

Removing a blank's label and replacing it with your printed or woven neck label, so the collar carries your brand along with the fiber, origin and care details a garment label needs.

Woven hang tags

A tag woven on a loom like a label, with a textured, substantial feel that survives handling better than card. A good fit for heavier pieces and higher-priced items.

Printed hang tags

Card hang tags printed with your artwork on the front and back, with room for a product name, size, story or barcode, attached by fastener or string loop.

Polybags

Clear bags that keep folded garments clean and dry through shipping, storage and store backrooms, with the size and style marked on the outside for easy picking.

Tissue wrap and sticker seals

Folded pieces wrapped in tissue and closed with your sticker seal, so the first thing a customer sees when they open the mailer or box is your brand.

Branded box pack-out

Goods packed into your branded boxes with cards and items arranged to your spec, for gift sets, PR kits and retail displays.

Files & artwork

What to send

  1. 01

Hang tag artwork at finished size

Front and back files at the exact tag size with bleed, the hole position marked, and any barcode supplied as a vector or high-resolution image.

  2. 02

    Neck label art and wording

A vector logo for the neck label plus the size, fiber content, country of origin, business name or RN and care wording you want printed or woven for each garment.

  3. 03

    Sticker and tissue designs

Sticker artwork at its final size and shape, plus tissue color or print references, so seals and wraps match the rest of the packaging.

  4. 04

    A packing spec

How each piece is folded, which side faces up, where the tag hangs, what goes in each bag or box, and anything a store's packing requirements call for.

Garments

What it suits best

  1. 01

    Tees and long sleeves

A consistent fold, a printed neck label, a hang tag at the neck label, then a polybag marked with the size: the standard retail-ready tee.

  2. 02

    Hoodies and crewnecks

Bulkier folds need larger bags or boxes; a woven hang tag at the neck label or side seam suits the heavier piece.

  3. 03

    Hats and beanies

A tag or sticker on the bill or cuff, then a bag or box sized so the crown is not crushed on the way to a store or customer.

  4. 04

    Gift sets and bundles

Several items folded and packed together in a branded box with tissue and a seal, ready to ship as one unit.

Care
  • Snip plastic tag fasteners with scissors rather than pulling them, which can tear the fabric.
  • Store bagged goods flat and out of direct sun so prints and folds stay crisp until sale.
  • Keep polybagged stock away from heat, which can make a bag stick to a plastisol print.
  • Leave tissue-wrapped pieces boxed until they ship so the wrap does not crease.
What Merch Mob does

One shop, start to finish.

  • Relabel blanks: remove the original label and apply your printed or woven neck label in its place.
  • Attach your woven or printed hang tags to every piece in the run.
  • Fold, polybag, tissue-wrap and sticker-seal each piece to your spec.
  • Pack goods into your branded boxes for gift sets, PR kits and bundles.
  • Run a final QC check, then ship in bulk to a warehouse or retailer or hold the stock for pick and pack fulfillment.
How an order runs

Six steps, nothing skipped.

Minimums and turnaround depend on the method, the garment and the run. The quote spells out both within 24 hours. DTG printing has no minimum, so a run of a few pieces is welcome.

  1. 01

    Quote & discovery

Send the details and artwork. Within 24 hours you get line-item pricing for garments, decoration, finishing and quantities, with a committed timeline.

  2. 02

    Specs & approval

Artwork is reviewed, a spec sheet is issued and a digital mockup is approved before anything runs. Sizes and colorways are confirmed here.

  3. 03

    Sourcing & setup

Blanks are sourced and checked on arrival. Screens are burned or embroidery digitized, files are prepped and a strike-off is run.

  4. 04

    Production

The first pieces are checked and signed off before the full run, with color and registration checks along the way.

  5. 05

    Finishing & packaging

Labels applied, folded, bagged, tagged and packed to spec, then a final QC pass.

  6. 06

    Delivery & fulfillment

Bulk shipped to you, your warehouse or a retailer, or picked, packed and shipped order by order to your customers.

FAQ

Retail Finishing questions

What is included in retail finishing?

Neck labels and relabeling, woven and printed hang tags, folding, polybags, tissue wrap, sticker seals and packing into branded boxes. You can pick any combination: some orders only need a label and a bag, while others go out fully tagged, wrapped and boxed. Each step is its own line on the quote.

Can you add custom hang tags to my order?

Yes. Woven and printed hang tags are part of retail finishing. Send your artwork at the finished size, front and back, along with any barcode or product details, and the tags are attached to each piece before it is bagged. Tell us where the tag should hang, since the neck label, a side seam and the sleeve each give a different look.

What are woven labels for clothing?

Woven labels are made on a loom, with the design formed from colored threads rather than printed on top. They are durable, slightly textured and hold small detail well in a damask weave, which is why they are the classic choice for neck and hem labels on higher-end pieces. Printed labels and tagless neck prints are the softer, flatter alternatives.

Why put garments in polybags?

Polybags keep garments clean, dry and folded through shipping, warehouse handling and store backrooms, and they let anyone read the size and style without opening anything. Many retailers and warehouses expect product to arrive bagged. For direct orders, tissue and a sticker seal inside the mailer make a better first impression.

Can finishing be added to a print or embroidery order?

Yes. Finishing is planned at the quote stage alongside the decoration, so labels, tags, bags and boxes are applied in the same production flow before anything ships. Adding it at the start is far easier than repacking finished goods later, so mention it when you request your quote.

How much does retail finishing add to the cost?

It depends on which steps you choose and the materials involved. Relabeling and tagging add handling per piece; hang tags, labels, bags, tissue and boxes add material costs; box pack-outs add time based on how many items go into each box. The quote prices each step separately so you can decide what is worth it for the drop.

How long does retail finishing take?

Finishing itself is a step at the end of production, but custom labels, woven hang tags and printed boxes can have their own lead time before they arrive. Your quote includes a committed timeline covering the whole job, and ordering labels and packaging early keeps them from holding up the run.
