What good looks like.
School and club apparel does a lot of work on a small budget. Spirit wear sells at the school store and funds the booster club, team orders outfit athletes for the season, class shirts mark a graduating year, and a club tee gives the robotics team or the drama department an identity. Most of these orders are organized by volunteers, teachers or parents who also have day jobs.
Good school orders are easy to run: a clear order window, youth and adult sizes on one form, a design that fits on a youth small as well as an adult extra large, and shirts packed so they can be handed out without sorting the whole box. School colors need to match, and the logo usually needs sign-off from the school or district before it goes on a shirt.
What schools and clubs order, and why.
- 01
Spirit wear
Tees, hoodies and caps in school colors sold through the school store, at games or in an online order window, often as a booster club fundraiser.
- 02
Team orders
Practice shirts, warmups and fan gear for school teams, ordered from the roster before each season and topped up for late additions.
- 03
Class and graduation shirts
Senior class shirts, graduating-year designs and class trip tees, usually ordered once a year after every student's size has been collected.
- 04
Club and activity shirts
Shirts for robotics, band, theater, debate and honor societies, often featuring a design the members drew themselves for that year.
- 05
Staff and teacher apparel
Polos and quarter-zips for staff on spirit days, open houses and field trips, embroidered with the school crest so teachers look like one team.
- 06
Event shirts
Homecoming, field day, fun runs and fundraisers get a shirt that doubles as a keepsake and makes groups easy to count on a field trip.
How we make it
Screen Printing
The cost-effective choice for spirit wear and class shirts, where many students share one design. Send Pantone references so school colors match across every shirt and every year.
MethodEmbroidery
A stitched crest on staff polos, jackets, caps and beanies looks official and survives years of school use, with digitizing included.
MethodDTG Printing
No minimum, so a small club, a handful of late orders or a full-color photo design can be printed without the cost of screens.
MethodFulfillment
For online spirit wear stores, we pick, pack and ship each family's order, so volunteers do not spend an evening sorting boxes in the gym.
- 01
Youth and adult tees
Cotton or blended tees in youth and adult sizes on one order. Check that the print size works on both ends of the run.
- 02
Hoodies and crewnecks
The spirit wear item families buy for cold game nights, often in the school's main color with a big front graphic.
- 03
Performance practice tees
Moisture-wicking shirts for practice and PE. Red and royal polyester dyes can tint a light print, so the exact blank is checked in the spec review.
- 04
Caps and beanies
Embroidered caps for spring sports and fan gear, and beanies for fall and winter game nights.
- 05
Staff polos
Embroidered polos in school colors for teachers and administrators at events, open houses and spirit days.
- Spirit wear often runs through an order window: families pick items and sizes, the window closes, and the run is sized from the totals.
- School team orders tend to be sized from the roster and land before the opening game, with a small top-up for students who join late.
- Class shirts are typically one design per grade per year, ordered with every student's size, so the count is known before printing.
- Can we get youth and adult sizes in the same order?
- Can you ship each family's order to their home?
- Do we need the school's permission to use the logo?
- Can you match our school colors?
- Can the order be packed by class or team?
When to order, by region.
- Desert Southwest. Many schools here start in late July or early August, so fall spirit wear and team gear should be ordered in early summer. Hoodies matter mostly for winter game nights, and light tees cover the rest of the year.
- California. Many districts return in mid-August, with homecoming in September or October. Spring brings graduation and senior class shirts, so order those before the end-of-year rush.
- Texas and Oklahoma. School starts in August and football season starts with it, so spirit wear demand begins on day one. Order fall gear in early summer, and graduation shirts follow in May.
- Florida, the Gulf Coast and the Deep South. Schools in the Deep South often start in early August, so fall spirit wear and football gear need to arrive in July. Heat favors light tees most of the year, and homecoming hoodies are a late-fall item.
- Upper South and Mid-Atlantic. Start dates vary widely across the region, from early August in some states to late August or just after Labor Day in others. Homecoming falls in September and October, and basketball makes winter a second spirit wear moment.
- Mountain West. Schools return in August and cold weather arrives early, so hoodies and beanies belong in the first fall spirit wear order. Ski and snowboard clubs add a winter order.
- Pacific Northwest. Many schools start in late August or just after Labor Day, and the wet season makes hoodies the spirit wear staple. Spring sports and graduation follow in a short, often rainy spring.
- Midwest and Plains. Start dates range from early August to just after Labor Day, homecoming comes early in the fall, and winter sports carry spirit wear through the cold months. Get hoodies ordered before the first football game.
- Northeast. Many schools start around or just after Labor Day, a little later than in the South, which leaves more time for fall orders. Homecoming and fall sports follow quickly, and cold weather makes hoodies and beanies the core spirit wear items.
- Hawaii. Public schools start in early August, earlier than most mainland schools, and warm weather keeps spirit wear focused on tees. Add transit time to the islands when ordering for the first week of school.
- Alaska. Schools start in mid-August and fall turns cold fast, so hoodies and beanies are part of the first order. Allow extra shipping time north, especially for schools in remote communities.

Merch for schools and clubs: questions
Can youth and adult sizes be on the same order?
Yes. Plan the print size first: a design scaled for an adult extra large can wrap past the sides of a youth small, so mixed orders often use a smaller print for youth sizes. That second size can mean a second set of screens, which the quote will show. The mockup lets you check placement on both.
What does school spirit wear cost, and is there a minimum?
DTG has no minimum. For screen printing and embroidery, the minimum and price depend on the number of pieces per design, ink colors, print locations, the mix of garments and any bagging or labeling by student. The quote comes back within 24 hours with line-item pricing, so a booster club can set a sale price that leaves room for the fundraiser.
Do we need permission to use our school's logo?
Usually, yes. School and district logos and mascots are often controlled by the school, the district or, for colleges, a licensing office, so get written approval before ordering. Club and class designs that do not use the official marks are simpler. Send the approved files with the order, and the mockup gives administrators something concrete to sign off.
When should we order back-to-school spirit wear?
Before school starts, which in much of the country means midsummer. Order windows, size collection and school approvals take longer than production planning, so set those deadlines first. The quote gives a committed timeline within 24 hours, so work back from the first game or the first spirit day, not the first day of class.
Can you ship spirit wear orders to each family?
Yes. Orders from a Shopify spirit wear store can be picked, packed and shipped to each home from our So Cal facility, with tracking. If you would rather hand orders out at school, the run ships in bulk with each order bagged and labeled to your spec, so distribution takes minutes instead of an evening.
Can you match our school colors?
Close enough that the colors read right on the field and in photos. Send Pantone references for both school colors, and screen print inks and embroidery thread are chosen to match. Blank colors come from what manufacturers make, which the mockup will show. Keep the same references on file for every future order.
