Los Angeles Apparel sells clothing to the public and blanks to decorators. Its retail site and product pages describe the core pieces as knit, cut, sewn and dyed in Los Angeles, and the brand puts its factory pay policy front and center on its homepage. Decorators order through a separate imprintable wholesale store that asks for an account before it shows products, so the facts on this page come from the retail product pages for the same style numbers.
What the range looks like
The blanks people search for fall into two families. The T-shirt side is led by the 1801, which the brand also calls the 1801GD, and runs down to the light 20001 fine jersey. The fleece side is the Heavy Fleece line, built around 14 oz pullovers, zips and crewnecks. Between them the brand offers long sleeves, women's cuts, and the same 1801 body in mineral wash, pigment dye and neon dye finishes.
The 1801GD and the garment-dye finish
The 1801 is 6.5 oz/yd² (220 g/m²) cotton knit from 18/1 open-end yarn, with a high rib collar and a roomy cut through the body and sleeves. It is dyed after sewing, which the brand says makes it shrink-free. The full spec sheet is on the Los Angeles Apparel 1801GD page.
Two traits of this shirt shape every print job. First, garment-dyed color moves a little between dye lots, so a white or cream ink that looks right on one batch can read slightly different on the next. Approve ink colors on shirts from the lot you are printing. Second, open-end yarn has a drier, slightly fuzzy surface. Screen printing covers it well, but DTG needs a firm pretreatment and press to flatten loose fibers, and fine lines can soften. Ring-spun vs open-end cotton explains the difference in the yarn.
Discharge is worth testing rather than assuming. Discharge ink works by removing dye, and how far it gets depends on the dye chemistry. The pigment-dyed versions of the 1801 are the riskiest, because pigment dye generally does not discharge cleanly.
The 20001 fine jersey
The 20001 is the light end of the range: 4.3 oz/yd², combed and ring-spun 30/1 cotton, with Heather Grey blended 90/10 with polyester. A fine, smooth yarn like this holds detail from DTG and water-based ink and gives a soft print. It is not a shirt for heavy embroidery, since dense stitching pulls and puckers light jersey; keep stitched marks small. On Heather Grey, the polyester share is low, but a quick test still makes sense before printing light ink.
Heavy Fleece hoodies
The HF09 pullover and HF10 zip-up are listed at 14 oz with a loose fit, a kangaroo pocket and ribbed cuffs and hem. The versions named here are piece dyed, meaning the fabric is dyed before cutting, which keeps color steady across a run. The brand also lists a garment-dyed HF10 for a washed look. The HF10 page states 100% cotton for every color except Ash; the HF09 page does not give fiber content, so ask before you plan discharge on it.
Heavy fleece is a forgiving base for embroidery and 3D puff. For the zip-up, plan around the zipper: a center-front print cannot cross it cleanly, so left-chest and full-back placements do most of the work. Printing on sleeves, hoods, pockets and zippers covers those locations.
Choosing among the styles
- A heavy, washed-looking tee with a made-in-LA story: the 1801GD.
- A soft, light tee for detailed or full-color art: the 20001.
- A heavy hoodie with even color across a large order: the HF09 or HF10 in piece dye.
Alternatives
Made Blanks and Shaka Wear also build heavy, garment-dyed tees, and AS Colour offers a faded heavy tee. The Comfort Colors 1717 is the widely stocked garment-dyed reference point. Garment-dyed blanks explained covers the finish in general.
