Decorating it
| Method | What to know |
|---|---|
| DTG Printing | The ring-spun cotton colors give DTG a smooth, tight surface. Pretreat darks evenly and cure fully; avoid the 65/35 heathers when bright, saturated color is the goal. |
| Screen Printing | Thin, soft inks suit a 4.5 oz shirt better than a thick plastisol block. Water-based ink or a soft-hand plastisol keeps the print from feeling heavier than the fabric. |
| Screen Printing | Polyester-rich heathers can bleed dye into white and pale inks during curing. Ask for low-bleed ink and a test print on any heather before a full run. |
| Embroidery | A light tee needs a small, low-density design and a soft mesh backing. Large logos sit better on a heavier blank or a hoodie than on this jersey. |
The 64000 is Gildan's Softstyle tee, the lighter and smoother sibling of the Gildan 5000. Gildan's wholesale site lists it as the 64000 Adult T-Shirt under the Softstyle name. It exists for buyers who want a softer, more retail feel without moving up to a fashion brand's price tier. It is a common base for creator merch, online stores and promotional runs where the shirt is meant to be worn, not stored in a drawer.
Who the 64000 suits
Pick it when the wearer cares how the shirt feels and the budget still matters: creator and podcast merch, store drops, conference shirts people keep, and gym or coffee shop retail. The XS start helps when a run includes smaller wearers who would swim in a Small. For heavy, structured streetwear it is the wrong tool; look at a heavyweight blank instead.
Fabric, weight and feel
Most colors are 100% ring-spun cotton at 4.5 oz/yd², which works out to roughly 150 GSM by conversion. Ring spinning twists the fibers tighter than budget yarns, so the surface has fewer loose ends and feels smoother against the skin; ring-spun vs open-end cotton covers why. Gildan says the fabric is knit at a high stitch density to give printers a smooth face.
The color list hides several different fabrics. Sport Grey and the Antique shades are 90/10 cotton/polyester. Graphite Heather is 50/50. Most other heathers, from Heather Navy to Heather Military Green, are 65/35 with polyester as the larger share. Those polyester-heavy heathers drape more and feel cooler, but they decorate like a blend, not like cotton.
Construction is simple: a tubular body without side seams, a narrow 5/8 inch rib collar, taped neck and shoulders, and double-needle stitching at the sleeves and hem. Light tubular jersey is prone to a little twist after washing, so artwork that runs wide toward the sides deserves a washed sample first.
Decorating the 64000
DTG
The cotton colors are a natural fit for DTG. A tight ring-spun face holds fine lines and photo detail, and the thinner fabric lets a soft DTG print move with the shirt. Darks still need pretreatment and a white layer, and the pretreat has to be cured fully or the white can wash out early.
Screen printing
At this weight, the feel of the ink matters as much as the image. A large block of thick plastisol can feel like a patch on a 4.5 oz shirt. Water-based ink or a soft-hand plastisol with fewer layers keeps the hand light. On the 65/35 heathers, plan for dye migration risk with white and pastel inks, and ask for low-bleed ink and a strike-off.
Discharge
Discharge only lifts dye from cotton, so it is an option on the 100% cotton colors and pointless on the polyester-rich heathers. How well a given color discharges varies, so treat any discharge plan as test-first.
Embroidery
A 4.5 oz jersey puckers easily under a needle. Keep marks small, choose open satin-stitch lettering over big fills and use a soft mesh backing so the inside does not scratch. Large embroidered logos belong on a heavier tee or a hoodie.
Sizing notes
Gildan's chart for the 64000 runs from XS (16 inch flat chest, 27 inch length) to 5XL (32 inch chest, 35 inch length). From Small up, the chest widths and body lengths match the 5000 exactly, so customers who know one Gildan shirt can size the other the same way. The sleeves are a touch longer: about 16 5/8 inches from center back on a Small, against 15 1/8 on the 5000. Gildan also makes the 64000L women's tee and the 64000B youth tee in the same Softstyle fabric.
Alternatives
- Heavier and cheaper to run in volume: the Gildan 5000.
- A side-seamed retail tee in combed, 32-singles cotton: the Bella+Canvas 3001, compared directly in Bella+Canvas 3001 vs Gildan Softstyle 64000.

- A midweight with a cleaner, more modern look: the AS Colour Staple Tee.
