Decorating it
| Method | What to know |
|---|---|
| Embroidery | Flat embroidery on the structured twill front is the classic finish. The six-panel front has a center seam, so the file should be digitized for caps and sewn from the center outward. |
| Embroidery | 3D puff embroidery suits the firm, structured front panels. Keep shapes bold with wide satin columns; thin lines and small text do not puff well. |
| Screen Printing | Screen-printed or other heat transfers can be applied to the twill front for full-color art that thread cannot match, but the curved front limits size. |
The 112 is Richardson's best-known trucker cap, and the maker presents it as the reference point for the whole category. It is a mid-profile, six-panel snapback with a structured twill front and a mesh back, and its long color list and familiar fit make it a common choice for brewery, business, team and brand caps.
Who the 112 suits
It suits almost any group that wants an embroidered snapback: breweries and bars, companies and contractors, sports teams and coaches, clothing brands and bands. The mid profile sits neither tall nor shallow on the head, which makes it a safe pick for a group with different tastes. If you want the tall, flat-billed retro look, a high-profile cap such as the Yupoong 6006 is closer.
Construction, fabric and fit
Richardson's technical specs list a Mid Pro shape, a mid profile, a structured front and six panels. The front panels are 60/40 cotton/polyester twill, and the back is 100% polyester trucker mesh. The bill comes precurved, the closure is an adjustable snap strap Richardson calls a Softsnap, and a padded cotton sweatband sits inside.
Structured means the front panels are backed with a stiffener (often called buckram) so they hold their shape off the forehead. A six-panel cap has two front panels joined by a seam down the middle, which is the main thing a decorator plans around. Cap profiles and fits explains profile, structure and panel counts across styles.
Decorating the 112
Flat embroidery
Embroidery on the front is the standard finish. Cap embroidery is sewn on a curved cap frame, and the design needs a file digitized for caps: the stitching usually works from the center out and from the bottom up so the fabric does not bunch against the seam. The center seam can make very thin lines or small text right on the seam look uneven, so keep fine details off the middle when you can. Embroidery digitizing explains why a cap file differs from a flat one.
3D puff
The structured front is a natural base for 3D puff embroidery, where satin stitches are sewn over foam to raise the design. It works best with bold letters and shapes that use wide satin stitch columns; fine detail and small type flatten out. 3D puff on hats vs garments covers the limits.
Patches and other spots
Embroidered, woven, leather-look and PVC patches can be sewn or heat-applied to the front, which is often the better route for detailed artwork or very small runs. Everything behind the two front panels is open mesh, which does not hold embroidery or most printing well, so all branding on a 112 lives on the twill front or on the bill. Custom hat decoration compares these options, and custom patches explains each patch type.
Printing
Full-color heat transfers can go on the twill front when artwork has gradients or photo detail that thread cannot reproduce. Direct screen printing on a curved, structured front is possible with special fixtures but limits size and coverage.
Sizing notes
The main adjustable size, which Richardson labels MD-LG or one size fits most, covers most adult heads. Youth, Small and XL versions exist, but only in select colors. For mixed groups, check whether your colors come in those sizes before promising a fit for everyone. Richardson's size charts list head circumference ranges per size.
